Itineraries

Day 1

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut (2,700 m)

Elevation: 1,843 m / 6,046 ft → 2,700 m / 8,858 ft

Distance: 8 km / 5 miles | Hiking Time: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Rainforest

Transfer from Moshi/Arusha to Marangu Gate for registration and briefing.

Start the trek through lush rainforest with tropical vegetation.

Spot monkeys (blue monkeys, colobus) and colorful bird species.

Walk uphill through scenic ridges and forested trails.

Arrive at Mandara Hut, enjoy dinner, and overnight rest.

 

Day 2

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,720 m)

Elevation: 2,700 m / 8,858 ft → 3,720 m / 12,205 ft

Distance: 12 km / 7 miles | Hiking Time: 6–8 hours | Habitat: Heath/Moorland

Begin with a gentle climb out of the forest zone.

Enter the open moorland, filled with giant heathers and unique alpine plants.

Enjoy sweeping views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

Trek across rolling terrain with fresh mountain air.

Arrive at Horombo Hut, dinner and overnight stay.

 

Day 3

Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut (3,720 m)

Elevation: 3,720 m / 12,205 ft → 4,389 m / 14,400 ft (Mawenzi Ridge)

Distance: 5 km / 3 miles | Hiking Time: 1–2 hours | Habitat: Heath/Moorland

Extra day for acclimatization to prevent altitude sickness.

Hike to Mawenzi Ridge, enjoying rugged volcanic landscapes.

Capture breathtaking views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

Return to Horombo Hut for meals and rest.

 

Day 4

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,703 m)

Elevation: 3,720 m / 12,205 ft → 4,703 m / 15,430 ft

Distance: 10 km / 6 miles | Hiking Time: 6–8 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert

Trek through high moorland and alpine desert.

Cross the wide barren “Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo.

Experience vast, stark, and dry mountain landscapes.

Spot occasional hardy alpine plants in the desert terrain.

Arrive at Kibo Hut, rest and prepare for summit night

Day 5

Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), descend to Horombo Hut (3,720

Distance: 22 km / 14 miles (ascent + descent)

Hiking Time: 10–15 hours | Habitat: Arctic to Heath

Midnight wake-up for the toughest climb to the summit.

Ascend to Gilman’s Point (5,669 m) and watch the sunrise.

Push on to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the Roof of Africa.

Day 6

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate (1,843 m), return to Moshi/Arusha

Distance: 20 km / 12 miles | Hiking Time: 5–7 hours | Habitat: Moorland & Rainforest

Begin the final descent through moorland into rainforest.

Spot monkeys, birds, and tropical flora along the way.

Arrive at Marangu Gate for check-out and certificate collection.

Meet your driver for transfer back to Kilimanjaro/Arusha airport.
