Who Does Not Need a Visa for Tanzania?

Citizens of the following countries do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days:

  • East African Community (EAC) countries:
    • Kenya
    • Uganda
    • Rwanda
    • Burundi
    • South Sudan
  • Other visa-exempt countries include:
    • Botswana
    • Ghana
    • Hong Kong
    • Jamaica
    • Malaysia
    • Namibia
    • Seychelles
    • Singapore
    • South Africa (for tourism, up to 90 days)
    • Zimbabwe

They can apply for a tourist or business visa online via the Tanzania Immigration eVisa portal or upon arrival (for eligible nationalities). 

 Who Needs Referral Visa Clearance (Cannot Get Visa on Arrival)?

Citizens from some countries must apply in advance and wait for approval before traveling. These include:

  • Afghanistan
  • Bangladesh
  • Burkina Faso
  • Chad
  • Eritrea
  • Guinea Bissau
  • Guinea Conakry
  • Iran
  • Iraq
  • Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyzstan)
  • Lebanon
  • Mali
  • Mauritania

  • Nigeria
  • Pakistan
  • Palestine
  • Somalia
  • Sierra Leone
  • Syria
  • Tajikistan
  • Turkmenistan

  • Stateless persons or persons with refugee status

 

NB: Applicants whose nationals fall under this category (Referral) are not advised to book flight tickets or make payments for any reservations in Tanzania before they get approval for their Visa. Applicants of Referral Visa are advised to apply at least two months before their date of travel.

Applicants or host Institutions are required to review the List of countries (from Tanzania Immigration website) which fall under Referral Visa from time to time as there might be some changes. 

Note: Stateless persons and Refugees who hold Vienna Convention documents are also required to obtain referral visa prior to coming to Tanzania

 

The visa fees and processing times for entering Tanzania vary depending on the type of visa you require. Below is a summary of the different visa categories, their associated fees, and general processing times:​

  1. Ordinary (Single Entry) Visa:
  • Fee: $50 USD.​
  • Processing Time: Up to 10 days. ​
  • Note: U.S. citizens are required to apply for a Multiple Entry Visa instead. ​
  1. Multiple Entry Visa:
  • Fee: $100 USD.​
  • Processing Time: Up to 10 days. ​
  •  Note: This visa is suitable for individuals who need to enter Tanzania multiple times within a year. ​
  1. Business Visa:
  • Fee: $250 USD.​
  • Processing Time: Up to 10 days. ​
  • Note: Intended for individuals entering Tanzania for business purposes such as special assignments or professional roles. ​
  1. Transit Visa:
  • Fee: $30 USD.​
  • Processing Time: Up to 10 days. ​
  • Note: For travelers transiting through Tanzania to another destination, valid for a period not exceeding seven days. ​
  1. Student Visa:
  • Fee: Varies based on the duration and nature of studies:​
    • Short-term (up to 3 months)- $50 USD.​
    • Multiple (1 year)- $250 USD.​
    • Research 6 months-multiple - $300
    • Phd Students 1 year-Multiple- $550
  • Processing Time: Up to 10 days. ​
  • Note: For individuals intending to study in Tanzania. ​
  1. Gratis Visa:
  • Fee: No charge.​
  • Processing Time: Up to 10 days. ​
  • Note: Issued to holders of diplomatic or official passports on official duty, and other categories as specified by the Commissioner General of Immigration. ​

Important Considerations:

  • Application: It's recommended to apply for your visa online through the to ensure a smoother entry process.​
  • Processing Time: Visa applications are typically processed within 10 days. Applicants are advised to apply at least two weeks before their intended travel date. ​
  • U.S. Citizens: Those traveling for tourism purposes are required to apply for a Multiple Entry Visa at a fee of $100 USD. ​
  • Referral Visa: Nationals from certain countries are required to obtain a referral visa before traveling to Tanzania. It's essential to check if your country falls under this category and apply accordingly.
